The Mystery of Lewis Carroll by Jenny Woolf
The Mystery of Lewis Carroll is a clear eyed at Lewis Carroll, and an antidote to a lot of the weird nonsense that has been talked about him. Divided into 10 chapers, it delves into different aspects of his life in some detail. It also presents him in a realistic light, showing that he has to be seen against the historical background of his own period.
The style of the book is very readable, more like a magazine article than a scholarly book, but the footnotes give it authority.
The Carroll fan will find plenty of food for thought here, with new information about Alice's older sister and material from Carroll's personal bank account, which in itself raises more mysteries. There is also some interesting material about who the "Alice" of the books actually was, since Carroll always said that it was NOT Alice Liddell.
A well produced book on good paper, it would make a nice gift for a fan of Alice in Wonderland, or anyone interested in 19th century biography. |
